Appeal deadlines: what each platform actually publishes
Most platforms publish a filing window and almost none publishes how long a review takes. Here are the official numbers, the ones that do not exist, and how to count your own deadline from the notice.
Short answer: count from the earliest date you can prove (the notice, or the day the account stopped working). File the internal appeal first, because it is the only route that closes on a documented clock, and keep the confirmation. No platform covered here promises a review time, so plan around the window, not around a hoped-for reply.
The rule that comes before any deadline
Every documented appeal starts inside the restricted account. Facebook asks you to log in; Instagram and Threads ask you to enter your username and password; X says to log in to the suspended account; YouTube appeals run from YouTube Studio; TikTok keeps a banned account login-accessible so the appeal can be filed; LinkedIn and Discord run through in-product prompts.
That means the first clock is not the appeal window. It is the recovery window. If the login is gone and cannot be recovered, no appeal text will be read, because the appeal form itself sits behind the login.
Recovery first, appeal second. An appeal prepared before login recovery is prepared out of order. Check which applies before you spend money on wording.
The official windows, surface by surface
These are windows, not review times. Where a platform publishes nothing, the entry says so rather than inventing a number. Regional variants exist and the platform decides which one applies to you.
| Surface | Appeal window | Published review time | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Facebook personal account | 180 days (“varies by region”) | None | One review; after a failed appeal Meta says you cannot request another review. Severe violations can skip the suspension stage entirely. |
| Facebook Messenger | 30 days | None | The shortest documented Meta window. Do not assume the Facebook 180 days applies here. |
| Instagram account | None published globally; a Colombia-only article cites 180 days | None | A deleted account cannot be restored. A failed ID review can lead to disablement and data deletion, so the document you submit matters. |
| Threads | None published | None | Separate surface with its own disabled-profile article and its own Account Status; do not fold it into Instagram. |
| Instagram / Facebook content (not the account) | Depends on the notice | “Up to 90 days”, and the request may be closed before review | Content appeals are a different queue from account appeals. Oversight Board appeals have their own 15-day window after a second review. |
| Ads and business assets | 6 months of reinstatement eligibility, then forfeiture | “Typically 48 hours” | The only published estimate in this table. Reviews are limited and final; re-requesting does not hurt your standing, but it can exhaust attempts. |
| TikTok | Strikes expire after 90 days; underage appeals 113 days (EEA/UK/CH 180, US 23) | None | Underage cases have deletion dates attached: day 120, day 187 or day 30 depending on region. |
| YouTube | 6 months for strikes and warnings; 1 year for removals; 9 months for hacked-channel support | None | One appeal per strike. A rejected appeal brings no extra penalty, but the strike stays for its own 90-day life. |
| None published | None | Identity review runs through Persona; a notarized affidavit is documented for Canada, the EU and the UK. | |
| X | None published | None | The appeal must be filed from the suspended account. No access to the phone and email may leave no documented route at all. |
| Discord | 6 months under EU/DSA rules | None | In-app Standing appeal; without backup codes, support cannot remove two-factor authentication. |
Official numbers change. Re-check the help article for your exact surface before relying on a date; this table is a map, not a legal calendar.
How to count your own deadline
Three inputs decide the number: the surface, the date, and what the notice says. Getting them wrong is the most common way people lose a case they could have filed.
- Identify the surface, not just the app.A Facebook profile, a Facebook Messenger account, an ad account and a Page have different windows. A business asset review is not a personal-account appeal.
- Fix the start date.Save the notice with its timestamp and note the day the account stopped working. If they differ, count from the earlier one.
- Read the notice for a stated window. Some notices state a duration or an appeal deadline. That sentence overrides a generic article, and it is evidence if the process is later questioned.
- Write the deadline down before you write the appeal. One line: surface, start date, window, last safe filing date. It turns a vague worry into a plan.
- File inside the window, then stop. One submission, one confirmation, one follow-up only if there are genuinely new facts. Repeating the same appeal does not reopen a closed queue.
The deadline you can miss is usually not the platform one. For external routes the clock is set by law or by the forum: data-protection complaints, consumer complaints, out-of-court dispute settlement, small claims and court limitation periods each have their own limits, and some are shorter than the platform window.
Four deadline claims that do not survive the help center
1. “You have 30 days”
Thirty days is documented for Messenger. Facebook personal accounts get 180 days, Instagram publishes no global window, and Threads publishes none at all.
Do instead: check the surface. A 30-day rule quoted at an Instagram case is unverified.2. “They usually answer in 24 hours”
No consumer appeal has a published review time. The only number Meta publishes is a 48-hour typical review for ads; everything else is a user report.
Do instead: plan around the window and keep proof of filing, not around an expected reply.3. “Waiting is safer”
Windows close. Facebook states that after a failed appeal or the end of the window the account is permanently disabled, with no second review. YouTube stops accepting strike appeals after six months.
Do instead: file once, early, with the evidence the flow asks for.4. “A duplicate case is fine”
Consumer accounts get one review and then finality. Ads have a limited number of reviews. Repeated submissions do not cancel a case number, but they can use up the attempts you have.
Do instead: one clean submission beats five emotional ones. What this page gives you, and what it does not
The table is public information and it belongs in the open. What it cannot tell you is which row applies to your case, whether the login gate is already lost, and what has to be in the filing before the date you just counted.
A free diagnosis answers three questions: which surface was restricted, whether the appeal route is still open, and which deadline actually applies. The paid packs add the case-specific route, the text, the evidence order and the date-by-date plan.
Frequently asked questions
Do platforms publish how long an appeal takes?
Almost never. None of the platforms covered here publishes a review time for a consumer account appeal. They publish windows for filing, evidence-retention periods and one business estimate: Meta says ad reviews are typically completed in 48 hours. Any other number you see is an estimate or a user report.
Is the Instagram appeal window 30 days?
Instagram publishes no global appeal window for disabled accounts. The only official number found is 180 days, in a help article that is shown only in Colombia. Thirty days is documented for Messenger, not for Instagram. Treat any 30-day claim for Instagram as unverified and file early.
What is the Facebook appeal deadline?
Facebook’s help center says you can appeal a suspension within 180 days, and that the period varies by region. If you do not appeal, or the appeal is unsuccessful, the account becomes permanently disabled and Meta says you will not be able to request another review.
Does the deadline run from the ban or from the notice?
From the enforcement action or the notice, depending on the platform. Save the exact date and time of the notice and the date your account stopped working: they are rarely identical, and the earlier date is the safer one to count from.
What happens if I miss the appeal window?
The internal appeal route can close permanently. Facebook says the account will be permanently disabled; Discord’s EU appeals window is six months; YouTube accepts strike appeals for six months and removal appeals for one year. After that, only external routes such as a regulator or a legal claim may remain, and those have their own time limits.
Can I appeal if I cannot log in?
Every documented platform appeal starts inside the restricted account, so recovery comes first. If you cannot recover the login, you are in a recovery case, not an appeal case. Some platforms document a hard dead end: X says that with no access to the phone and email, the only option may be a new account.
